Is Crown Point Indiana a Good Place to Live? A Local's Honest Take

March 21, 2026

I get this question a lot — from Chicago transplants, from people moving across the country, from young families researching school districts, from retirees looking for a slower pace. "Is Crown Point Indiana really as good as everyone says?"

I live and work in Crown Point. I've helped dozens of families buy homes here. And the honest answer? For the right person, Crown Point isn't just good — it's exceptional. But it's not perfect for everyone, and you deserve the truth before you commit to a move.

Here's my real take on what living in Crown Point, Indiana is actually like.

The Short Answer: Yes — Especially If You Have Kids

Crown Point, Indiana is consistently ranked among the best places to live in the state. It has one of the most highly regarded school districts in Northwest Indiana, a genuinely charming historic downtown, safe neighborhoods, reasonable home prices (especially compared to Chicagoland), and a quality of life that most people who move here say they didn't expect to love as much as they do.

It's not flashy. It doesn't have Chicago's nightlife or a major league sports team. But it has something those places often can't offer: a real sense of community, room to breathe, and a place where your kids can grow up in good schools without you going broke paying for it.

Crown Point Schools: The #1 Reason Families Move Here

If you have school-age children, this is probably the biggest factor in your decision — and Crown Point delivers. The Crown Point Community School Corporation is consistently one of the highest-rated public school districts in Lake County.

Crown Point High School earns regular state recognition for academic performance, Advanced Placement participation, athletics (particularly wrestling and girls basketball), and fine arts programming. It's the kind of school where kids can genuinely thrive across multiple areas — not just one.

The elementary and middle schools are strong across the board. Teachers are engaged, parent involvement is high, and the community clearly invests in its schools. For families relocating from Illinois suburbs, most say Crown Point's schools compare favorably — and cost them far less in property taxes.

If school quality is your primary driver, Crown Point is hard to beat in this region.

The Historic Downtown: Crown Point's Signature Feature

At the center of Crown Point sits the iconic Old Lake County Courthouse — a stunning Victorian-era building surrounded by a town square that hosts community events year-round. This isn't just a photo op. It's a functioning, vibrant downtown with locally owned restaurants, boutiques, a farmers market, holiday events, and the kind of community character that most suburbs have long since bulldozed in favor of strip malls.

Downtown Crown Point gives the city a genuine sense of place. Residents take pride in it. Newcomers are consistently surprised by how much life it has. It's a meaningful differentiator from other Northwest Indiana communities that lack a true downtown anchor.

Neighborhoods: Something for Every Buyer

Crown Point isn't one neighborhood — it's a collection of distinct pockets that appeal to different buyers:

Historic Downtown Area — Victorian-era homes, bungalows, and character-rich properties within walking distance of the square. The most unique housing stock in the city. Popular with buyers who want personality and walkability.

Established Family Subdivisions — Taft Estates and similar neighborhoods offer mature trees, good lot sizes, and the well-worn character of a community that's been around long enough to have real roots.

Newer South-Side Developments — More contemporary floor plans, modern finishes, and open layouts for buyers who want move-in-ready and newer construction. Strong value per square foot.

Rural Crown Point — For buyers who want Crown Point schools but don't want a subdivision, the outlying areas offer acreage, privacy, and a different pace entirely.

Whatever your lifestyle, Crown Point probably has a neighborhood that fits. That variety is one of the things I love most about this market.

Cost of Living: Better Than Illinois, Better Than You Think

One of the biggest drivers of Crown Point's growth is the cost comparison to Chicagoland. The numbers are genuinely compelling:

Property taxes in Crown Point and Lake County run significantly lower than comparable properties in Cook County, Illinois. For a $350,000 home, the annual tax difference can easily be $4,000–$8,000 per year — real money that compounds over time.

Indiana's income tax is lower than Illinois (3.15% vs. 4.95% as of writing). Indiana has no estate tax. For families making long-term financial decisions about where to build wealth, these differences add up to meaningful money over decades.

Home prices in Crown Point offer substantially more square footage, lot size, and quality than comparable price points in the Chicago suburbs. The $350,000 you'd spend on a modest townhome in Naperville or Orland Park buys you a proper single-family home with a real yard in Crown Point.

What Crown Point Is Not

I promised you honest, so here's the other side:

It's not urban. If you need walkable city life, Crown Point isn't it — it's a suburban/small-town community, full stop. You will drive to most things.

The commute to Chicago is real. Crown Point is roughly 35–45 miles from downtown Chicago. On a good day, that's 45 minutes. On a bad traffic day on I-80 or I-94, it can be 90 minutes. Remote workers have embraced Crown Point enthusiastically; traditional five-day-a-week Chicago commuters find it more demanding.

Dining and entertainment are limited compared to the city. Crown Point has solid local restaurants and is growing, but it's not Chicago. If world-class dining variety and nightlife are priorities, you'll need to drive north.

Winters are real. Northwest Indiana gets lake-effect snow from Lake Michigan. It's not as severe as South Bend, but February in Crown Point is genuinely cold and occasionally very snowy. If you're coming from the south, account for that.

Who Crown Point Is Perfect For

Based on the clients I've helped move here, Crown Point is the right choice if you:

  • Have kids or plan to, and school quality is a top priority
  • Work remotely full-time or have a hybrid schedule (2–3 days in the city)
  • Want significantly more home and more space than the Chicago suburbs offer
  • Value community, safety, and a genuine downtown character
  • Are making a long-term financial decision about where to build equity
  • Want access to outdoor recreation (Indiana Dunes is 45 minutes north)

My Honest Recommendation

If you're seriously considering Crown Point, come spend a Saturday here before you decide. Walk the downtown square. Drive through a few neighborhoods. Have lunch at a local restaurant. Talk to people. The vibe is hard to describe in a blog post — you have to feel it.
